Cranberries On Top |
I am a Visual Communication Design student and my blog is pretty much dedicated to all things that inspire great design, and of course, design itself in all its forms. Some of the work is my own (and will be marked as such) and the rest is everything I find inspirational and amazing. |
I volunteered to design various elements for the Sexual Violence = Silence Protest that takes place at Rhodes University. The protest involves various individuals, men and women, in a march against sexual violence. Women in solidarity with those silenced by sexual violence have their mouths taped for the day to show their support as well as their resolve. Men are also encouraged to take part, showing their solidarity by supporting those who are taped and wearing “Men against Rape” shirts.
The protest starts at 6am, women are ‘silenced’ at 7am, and then throughout the day, various activities take place involving the protesters. The project struck me as something powerful and deeply important and I was honored to play my part both in the protest and in the design.
The following are just some of my designs for the event.
I designed these to be modeled after protesters wearing the different shirts i.e. women with their mouths taped wearing the solidarity shirts and men un-taped wearing the men against rape shirts. They are meant to be seen as ‘interactive flyers’ so that people could take home the information that they would usually only see on actual protesters’ shirts.

Incredible illustrations by Minjae Lee
Lee uses markers, pens, crayons and acrylic to create the drawings, featuring women and characterized by an atmosphere of mystery and drama.
Looking at his work, you can understand how Lee is inspired by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Nonami, whose work mainly features women in mythical and magical atmospheres.
